Yes, we’ve all seen those people on the Internet.

And while on your endless search for “the big break” that will make you rich and give you the life of your dreams… you probably stumbled upon this little ‘ol thing called… copywriting. 

But the more you look into it, the more mixed messages you’re getting… 

Why is it that some copywriters seem to be making MILLIONS… and other copywriters are barely scraping by?

Can copywriting really make you rich? Or is it just another one of those empty promises that only a select few are lucky enough to achieve?

Well after 10 years working in this industry… I’m here to confidently tell you that absolutely, without a shred of doubt…. Copywriting can make you rich… in more ways than one. 

And at the end of this article, I’ll even show you the BIGGEST invoice I’ve ever sent…

Now, I promised I’d keep it 100… and YES copywriting CAN make you rich. But there’s something all those gurus out there aren’t telling you… 

That before you can “get rich quick”… you need an intentional business plan that takes you on a journey of ups and downs – MANY milestones, goals, and setbacks along the way…

That overnight success story… actually took YEARS of trials and error… and a night.

And that copywriter who’s making millions… didn’t start off charging hundreds of dollars an hour… 

The truth is that in copywriting, just like anything else… you get out what you put into it. 

I’m NOT going to tell you that it’ll be easy… but I AM telling you that if you persevere and work hard, there are 5 pretty badass ways that copywriting will make you rich. 

And yes, #5 is all about that moneyyyyyyyyy. And to prove it to you, I’m going to show you the single biggest invoice I ever sent to one of my retainer clients in a single month.

#1. Freedom

Do you want to know a secret? Being rich isn’t all about the amount of money in your bank account. Now, I promise that I WILL talk about money later on in this article… but first, I want to talk about all of the other ways that copywriting can make you rich… 

To some people, myself included, having happiness and freedom is what being rich really means. When you’re stuck in a 9-5, commuting for hours each day, feeling unappreciated and undervalued… chances are it doesn’t really matter how much money you’re making, because you FEEL unhappy and unsatisfied with your life. 

Copywriting gives you a way out of that life. 

Want to sleep in until 9:00, take a 2-hour lunch break, or stop working at 3 pm every day? When you’re a freelance copywriter, you can do all of that if you want to. Because you work for YOURSELF…  your life suddenly becomes so much more balanced, easy-going, and enjoyable. 

You can work when you want, where you want, for as long as you want. It’s hard to put a price tag on freedom like that.  

#2. Happiness

In my copywriting coaching program, one of the biggest reasons that many of my students start looking into freelancing is so that they can spend more time with their family and loved ones. 

The single mom who wants to be home with her kids… the dad that traveled for work and was missing out on too much… the daughter who wants to spend more time and take care of her elderly parents… or the 20-something-year-old that wants to spend more time making lasting memories with their friends… 

And just like in #1, copywriting gives you the ability to spend more time with the people who matter most to you… and there’s no secret here… when you spend more time connecting with the people you love… you’re happier. 

But copywriting gives you more than just freedom and happiness… it also gives you the ability to jet off to, oh I don’t know, how about Italy for a weekend getaway?! What do you say? Which brings us to… 

#3. Experience

One of my personal favorite things about being a copywriter is the ability to travel whenever, wherever I want (well, before the global pandemic that is).

Just in the past few years, I’ve been to Italy, Spain, Russia, Morocco, France, Costa Rica, Aruba, Germany, Hawaii, Ireland, Scotland and New Zealand.

And I didn’t need to put in a single vacation request, get it approved by my boss, or make sure I was back in a certain amount of time.

All I needed to do was pack up my laptop and take it with me. 

Yes, I’ve written in the cafes of Paris, 5-star Riads in Morocco, overlooking the Southern Italian coastline from flower-covered terraces, and from cozy AirBnb’s on the side of a mountain.

Who says you have to choose between seeing the world or making tons of money? When you’re a copywriter you can have the best of both worlds. And to me – experiences are better than THINGS any day of the week. It’s actually scientifically proven that experiential purchases provide more enduring happiness than material purchases.

#4. Fulfillment

Okay, so this one might be tied for being my favorite part of the job… 

That I actually make a difference in people’s lives. When you’re a copywriter it is literally your job to get good products into the hands of people who actually need them. 

And there’s no better feeling than writing copy so compelling that it convinces the biggest skeptic to buy a product or service that CHANGES their freaking life.

Watching my students quit their 9-5s, travel the world, spend more time with their families, and find true happiness is SO rewarding for me. THAT is why I do this… more than any other reason. 

It’s why I continue to film these videos, host challenges, and teach programs. Watching you guys succeed is what truly fuels my fire and keeps me going. Alright…. What you’ve all been waiting for….. 

#5. MONEY

So what you REALLY want to know… CAN COPYWRITING MAKE ME RICH?? Like money rich.

Yes, of course it can. But like I said in the beginning of this article, you get out what you put in. Don’t expect to make a million dollars in your first year.

It takes time to build up the experience, expertise, and social proof you need to charge the big-bucks. 

When I first started my freelancing business after quitting my job at Mindvalley and moving back to Canada, I lived in a friend’s tiny spare room and slept on an air mattress from Walmart and I could barely pay my friend’s-dad’s-discounted rent of $400 a month.

But now that I’ve been doing this for 10 years… I’ve built a business where I CAN charge big bucks. Because I’ve proven my skill time and time again… I’ve made myself invaluable to my clients… and I’ve become in-demand enough to have a months-long waiting list…

And to give you an idea of just how much an experienced copywriter can make… this is the biggest invoice that I’ve ever sent out. Now this was for ONE month of work with ONE client…
